About B1 Preliminary Reading Part 6
- Task: Open cloze – a short text with 6 gaps; you write one word in each gap (there are no options). 1 mark per question.
- What it tests: grammar words: prepositions, pronouns, articles, auxiliary verbs, linkers and the words in fixed phrases.
- Suggested time: about 6 minutes.
How to do it
- Read the whole text before you start, then the sentence around each gap.
- Decide what kind of word is missing: a preposition, a pronoun, an auxiliary verb…
- Write only one word, and check your spelling.
Example
“I’ve lived in this town ____ I was born, so I know every street.”
Answer: since. We use since + a point in time with the present perfect (“I’ve lived … since I was born”). For is wrong because it goes with a period of time (for ten years). Read the whole sentence: the tense before the gap often tells you the word.
