About B1 Preliminary Reading Part 1
- Task: Short texts – 5 short texts – notices, signs, labels, messages, emails – each with one question and three options (A, B or C). 1 mark per question.
- What it tests: understanding the main message of short real-life texts.
- Suggested time: about 6 minutes.
How to do it
- Read each text and think about where you might see it and who wrote it.
- Read the three options and find the one that means the same as the text, in different words.
- Check the small words – only, before, after, not, unless – they often change the meaning.
Example
Notice on a swimming pool door: “Children under 8 must be with an adult in the water at all times. Older children may swim alone after 5 pm.”
A Children of any age can swim alone after 5 pm. B A seven-year-old needs an adult with them in the pool. C Adults can only swim after 5 pm.
Answer: B. “Under 8” includes a seven-year-old, and they must be with an adult “at all times”. A is wrong: only older children can swim alone. C is not in the notice.
