Reading · Part 5
Multiple-choice cloze. Read a short text and choose the right word (A, B, C or D) for each of the six gaps.
About B1 Preliminary Reading Part 5
- Task: Multiple-choice cloze – a short text with 6 gaps; for each gap you choose the right word from four options (A, B, C or D). 1 mark per question.
- What it tests: vocabulary: words with similar meanings, collocations, phrasal verbs and the prepositions that go with words.
- Suggested time: about 6 minutes.
How to do it
- Read the whole text first to understand what it is about.
- Look at the words just before and after each gap: often only one option fits with them.
- Try every option in the gap before you choose.
Example
“My grandfather ____ me to cook when I was ten.”
A learnt B taught C showed D explained
Answer: B (taught). We say teach someone to do something. You learn something yourself (I learnt to cook), show needs “how”: showed me how to cook, and you explain something to someone. Try each option in the gap with the words after it.
