Reading · Part 4
Gapped text. Five sentences have been taken out of a text. Put each one back in the right place. There are three extra sentences you don't need.
About B1 Preliminary Reading Part 4
- Task: Gapped text – one text with 5 sentences removed; you choose where each sentence goes from eight options (A–H). Three sentences are not needed. 1 mark per question.
- What it tests: how a text is organised and how sentences are linked: pronouns (it, they, this), linkers and the order of ideas.
- Suggested time: about 9 minutes.
How to do it
- Read the text with the gaps first to follow the main ideas.
- Look at the sentences before and after each gap, and find words that point back or forward.
- Read the text again with your answers to check that it makes sense.
Example
From the text: “Last summer our family tried a holiday without phones. ____ By the third day, though, we were playing cards every evening and nobody missed the internet.”
A The first two days were very difficult. B We are planning to do it again next year.
Answer: A. “Though” after the gap shows a contrast: something bad first, then “by the third day” things were better. A gives the bad part and the time (“the first two days”) that links to “the third day”.
