Multiple choice. Read a longer text and answer five questions. Choose A, B, C or D.
About B1 Preliminary Reading Part 3
- Task: Multiple choice – one longer text followed by 5 questions, each with four options (A, B, C or D). 1 mark per question.
- What it tests: detailed understanding, the writer's opinion and attitude, and the general meaning of the text.
- Suggested time: about 10 minutes.
How to do it
- Read the whole text first to get the general idea.
- The questions follow the order of the text; the last one is often about the whole text.
- Choose the option that means the same as the text, not the one that just repeats a word from it.
Example
From the text: “When I started running, I hated it. I only kept going because my sister had paid for us both to enter a race, and I didn’t want to waste her money.”
Why did the writer continue running at first?
A She enjoyed it from the start. B She didn’t want to let her sister down. C She wanted to win a race. D She had paid for the race herself.
Answer: B. Her sister paid, and she “didn’t want to waste her money”. A says the opposite (“I hated it”), nothing is said about winning (C), and her sister paid, not her (D).
