How B1 Preliminary is scored
Each of the four papers – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking – gets its own score on the Cambridge English Scale. Your overall score is the average of the four, and each paper counts the same (25%).
| Overall score | Result |
|---|---|
| 160–170 | Grade A – you also get a B2 certificate |
| 153–159 | Grade B – pass at B1 |
| 140–152 | Grade C – pass at B1 |
| 120–139 | Level A2 – no B1 Preliminary pass, but an A2 certificate |
| Below 120 | No certificate |
You can pass even if one paper is weaker: a high score in another paper makes up for it, because only the average counts.
