Reading · Part 2
Matching. Read about five people and eight short texts, and decide which text is best for each person.
About B1 Preliminary Reading Part 2
- Task: Matching – descriptions of 5 people and 8 short texts (for example books, courses or places to visit); you choose the best text for each person. Three texts are not needed. 1 mark per question.
- What it tests: finding specific information and matching what people need to what the texts offer.
- Suggested time: about 8 minutes.
How to do it
- Underline what each person needs – usually three things.
- Find the text that matches all of them, not just one or two.
- Be careful with texts that match some of the things but not all.
Example
Person: Marta wants a weekend course where she can learn something practical. She doesn’t want to sit in a classroom, and she can’t spend more than €50.
Text D: “Bike repair for beginners: two Saturday mornings in our workshop, fixing real bikes. All tools provided. €45.”
Text F: “Photography weekend: learn to use your camera on walks around the old town. Saturday and Sunday, €80.”
Answer: D. It is practical, at the weekend, not in a classroom and under €50. F also happens outside, but at €80 it is too expensive. Check every point the person needs.
