In Speaking you answer the examiner's questions, but you also need to ask questions in Part 3 and in your emails. Getting the word order right makes a big difference.

Word order

Question word + auxiliary + subject + verb.

Present / past simple
Wh- + do / does / did + subject + verb
What do you do at the weekend? Where did you go?
Other tenses
Wh- + be / have / will / can + subject …
What are you doing? Have you ever been to Italy?

Question words

Choose the word that asks for the right information.

Asking about people and things
who, what, which, whose
Whose bag is this? Which colour do you prefer?
Asking about details
how long, how often, how much, how many, how far
How often do you go swimming?
Subject questions
who / what + verb (no do / did)
Who called you last night?

How it comes up in Part 6

In Reading Part 6 you write one word in each gap. The missing words are often small grammar words like these.

How often do you play football?

'How often' asks about frequency.

What time does the film start?

Present simple question with it (the film): does.

How long have you lived here? – For five years.

The answer is a period of time, so 'How long'.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Where you live?✓ Where do you live?Present simple questions need 'do' / 'does'.
  • ✗ What did you bought?✓ What did you buy? After 'did', use the infinitive.
  • ✗ Who did call you?✓ Who called you? When 'who' is the subject, don't use 'did'.

Finn's exam tip

To check a question, answer it! 'How long…?' → a time (for two years). 'How often…?' → frequency (every day). 'Whose…?' → a person (Tom's).
