About C1 Advanced Speaking Part 4

  • Task: Discussion – about 5 minutes. The examiner asks both candidates more abstract questions related to the topic of Part 3.
  • What it tests: expressing, justifying and developing opinions on more abstract topics.

How to do it

  1. Give extended answers with reasons and examples.
  2. Respond to your partner and develop their ideas.
  3. Show that you can talk about abstract ideas, not just personal experience.

Example answer

Examiner: Is technology making people less patient?

Good answer: “To some extent, yes. We’ve become used to instant answers, so waiting even a few seconds for a page to load can feel frustrating. That said, I’m not convinced it affects every area of life – people still spend years learning an instrument or training for a marathon.”

Why it works: a nuanced position (“to some extent”, “that said”), an explanation and a counterexample. At C1, examiners look for a balanced, well-organised argument.
