C1 ADVANCED · SPEAKING

Speaking · Part 3

Collaborative task. About 4 minutes. Discuss a question with five prompts with your partner for two minutes, then work towards a decision.

How it works: the examiner's words are read aloud (you can also read them). Tap Start speaking and answer before the time runs out. If you like, record yourself and listen to your answer – the recording stays on your device and is never sent anywhere.

About C1 Advanced Speaking Part 3

  • Task: Collaborative task – about 4 minutes. The two candidates discuss a question with five written prompts for 2 minutes, then have 1 minute to reach a decision.
  • What it tests: exchanging ideas, evaluating, negotiating and reaching a decision.

How to do it

  1. Discuss the prompts with your partner and build on each other's ideas.
  2. Evaluate the options – don't just describe them.
  3. In the last minute, work towards a decision together.

Example answer

Task: What impact have these things had on the way people communicate? (social media, email, video calls…)

Good answer: “Social media’s an obvious place to start. It’s made it effortless to keep in touch, but I’d argue the conversations have become rather superficial.” – “That’s a fair point, although for people living abroad it can be a lifeline. Shall we move on to video calls?”

Why it works: developed opinions, concessions (“That’s a fair point, although…”) and managing the discussion (“Shall we move on to…?”). In the last minute, you must try to reach a decision together.
