About C1 Advanced Reading Part 8

  • Task: Multiple matching – one long text divided into sections, or several short texts, and 10 questions; you find which section says each thing. 1 mark per question.
  • What it tests: finding specific information, opinions and attitudes quickly, and recognising ideas written in different words.
  • Suggested time: about 16 minutes.

How to do it

  1. Read the questions first and underline the key idea in each.
  2. Scan the texts for the same idea written in other words.
  3. Keep moving: come back to difficult questions at the end.

Example

Question: Which section mentions a decision the writer later regretted?

Section C: “Turning down the offer from the orchestra felt sensible at the time; I have spent years wondering what might have been.”

Section D: “I have never looked back since I left the bank, despite the drop in income.”

Answer: C. “Wondering what might have been” shows regret about turning down the offer. D is about a decision too, but “never looked back” means no regret. Underline the key idea in the question (here: regret) and look for a paraphrase of it.
