About C1 Advanced Reading Part 7

  • Task: Gapped text – one long text with 6 paragraphs removed; you choose where each of seven paragraphs (A–G) goes. One paragraph does not fit anywhere. 2 marks per question.
  • What it tests: how a long text is organised: the flow of ideas, time and reference links between paragraphs.
  • Suggested time: about 15 minutes.

How to do it

  1. Read the main text first to follow the argument or story.
  2. Look at the beginning and end of each paragraph for links: names, times, reference words and linkers.
  3. Read the finished text again to check it makes sense.

Example

End of one paragraph: “… and so, for almost a century, the bridge was considered impossible to build.”

Paragraph B begins: “That changed in 1998, when a young engineer suggested an approach nobody had tried.”

Paragraph E begins: “The bridge is now crossed by thousands of cars every day.”

Answer: B. “That changed” refers back to the idea that the bridge was “impossible to build”, and the story moves forward in time. E could come later, but it does not connect to the paragraph before. Check the end of the paragraph before the gap and the start of the one after.
