About C1 Advanced Reading Part 6

  • Task: Cross-text multiple matching – four short texts by different writers on the same topic, and 4 questions; you decide which writer agrees or disagrees with another on a certain point. 2 marks per question.
  • What it tests: understanding and comparing opinions and attitudes across several texts.
  • Suggested time: about 12 minutes.

How to do it

  1. Read all four texts and note each writer's opinion on every point.
  2. Read each question carefully: it asks which writer shares or differs from another's view.
  3. Compare the relevant parts of the texts side by side before you answer.

Example

Question: Which writer shares writer A’s view that remote work makes collaboration harder?

A: “Whatever the gains in focus, teams working remotely lose the casual exchanges from which good ideas so often emerge.”

C: “Spontaneous conversation is the first casualty of working from home, and creative work suffers as a result.”

D: “Video calls have, if anything, made meetings more efficient and inclusive.”

Answer: C. Both A and C say remote work loses informal, spontaneous talk, and that ideas or creativity suffer. D talks about meetings becoming better, which is a different point. First find writer A’s exact opinion, then look for the same idea in different words.
