B2 FIRST · SPEAKING

Speaking · Part 3

Collaborative task. About 4 minutes. Discuss a question with five ideas with your partner for two minutes, then try to reach a decision.

How it works: the examiner's words are read aloud (you can also read them). Tap Start speaking and answer before the time runs out. If you like, record yourself and listen to your answer – the recording stays on your device and is never sent anywhere.

About B2 First Speaking Part 3

  • Task: Collaborative task – about 4 minutes. The two candidates talk together for 2 minutes about a question with five written prompts, then for 1 minute try to reach a decision.
  • What it tests: exchanging ideas, agreeing and disagreeing, suggesting and reaching a decision.

How to do it

  1. Talk to your partner, not to the examiner.
  2. Ask your partner's opinion and respond to what they say.
  3. You don't have to agree – but you do have to discuss.

Example answer

Task: How could a town encourage more people to use public transport? (prompts: cheaper tickets, more bike lanes, fewer car parks…)

Good answer: “Shall we start with cheaper tickets? I think that would make the biggest difference, especially for students.” – “I see what you mean, but if the buses are always late, price won’t matter. Don’t you think reliability is more important?”

Why it works: it invites the partner, gives reasons, disagrees politely (“I see what you mean, but…”) and asks for an opinion. The aim is a real discussion, not a list of ideas.
