B2 FIRST · SPEAKING

Speaking · Part 2

Long turn. About 4 minutes. Compare two photographs on your own for a minute, then answer a short question about your partner's photos.

How it works: the examiner's words are read aloud (you can also read them). Tap Start speaking and answer before the time runs out. If you like, record yourself and listen to your answer – the recording stays on your device and is never sent anywhere.

About B2 First Speaking Part 2

  • Task: Long turn – about 4 minutes. Each candidate compares two photos and answers a question about them for 1 minute, then comments briefly (about 30 seconds) on the other candidate's photos.
  • What it tests: comparing, describing, expressing opinions and speculating.

How to do it

  1. Compare the photos – don't describe each one in detail.
  2. Answer the question printed above the photos.
  3. Use language for speculating: "It might be…", "They look as if…".

Example answer

Task: Compare the photos (people learning in a classroom / people learning online at home) and say why they might have chosen to learn this way.

Good answer (beginning): “Both photos show people studying, but in very different settings. In the first one they’re in a classroom with a teacher, whereas in the second a woman is learning on her own at home. The people in the classroom might prefer it because they can ask questions straight away, while the woman has probably chosen to study online because it fits around her job.”

Why it works: it compares (both, whereas, while) instead of describing each photo, and it answers the question with speculation (might, probably).
