Reading · Part 7
Multiple matching. Read four short texts and decide which one each of the ten questions refers to.
About B2 First Reading Part 7
- Task: Multiple matching – one long text or several short texts, and 10 questions; you find which text or section says each thing. 1 mark per question.
- What it tests: finding specific information and opinions quickly, and recognising ideas written in different words.
- Suggested time: about 15 minutes.
How to do it
- Read the questions first and underline the key idea in each one.
- Scan the texts for the same idea written in other words – the exact words rarely appear.
- Don't spend too long on one question: move on and come back to it.
Example
Question: Which person mentions being surprised by how quickly they improved?
A (Lena): “I expected to struggle for months, but within a few weeks I could hold a basic conversation.”
B (Tom): “Progress was slow, which I had been warned about, but I enjoyed every lesson.”
Answer: A. Lena “expected to struggle for months” but improved “within a few weeks”: that is surprise at fast progress. Tom’s progress was slow and he expected it, so the idea doesn’t match. The text rarely uses the same words as the question.
