About B2 First Reading Part 5
- Task: Multiple choice – one long text followed by 6 questions, each with four options (A, B, C or D). 2 marks per question.
- What it tests: detailed understanding: the writer's opinion and attitude, the main idea, details, the meaning of words and phrases in context and the purpose of parts of the text.
- Suggested time: about 15 minutes.
How to do it
- Read the text quickly first to get the general idea.
- The questions follow the order of the text: find the part each question is about.
- Read that part carefully and choose the option that means the same – not the one that repeats its words.
Example
From the text: “People assume that moving to the countryside was a brave decision. In truth, it was the easiest choice I have ever made: the city had simply stopped feeling like home.”
What does the writer say about moving to the countryside?
A It required a lot of courage. B It was not as hard as people think. C She regrets leaving the city. D She had always dreamed of it.
Answer: B. Other people think it was “brave”, but “in truth” it was “the easiest choice”. A is what other people think, not the writer. C and D are not in the text. Watch for “people assume … in truth”: the writer’s opinion comes after.
