Reading · Part 6
Gapped text. Six sentences have been removed from a text. Put each one back in the right place. There is one extra sentence you don't need.
About B2 First Reading Part 6
- Task: Gapped text – one long text with 6 sentences removed; you choose where each of seven sentences (A–G) goes. One sentence does not fit anywhere. 2 marks per question.
- What it tests: how a text is organised: the links between ideas, reference words (this, they, such…) and linkers (however, as a result…).
- Suggested time: about 13 minutes.
How to do it
- Read the text with the gaps first to follow the story or argument.
- Look at the sentences before and after each gap, and find words that point back or forward.
- When you have finished, read the whole text again with your answers to check it makes sense.
Example
From the text: “The first prototype of the app was a disaster. ____ It was this honest feedback, rather than any clever marketing, that shaped the version people use today.”
A Testers complained that it was confusing and slow. B Sales grew steadily over the next few years.
Answer: A. “This honest feedback” after the gap needs something before it that is feedback: the testers’ complaints. B talks about sales, so “this honest feedback” would refer to nothing. Look for words like this, these, such that point back.
