Make, do, have and take
Which verb goes with which noun: make a mistake, do homework, have a shower, take a photo.

These four verbs are some of the most common in English – and in Reading Part 5 the four options are often exactly these verbs! You just need to learn which nouns they go with.
make
Usually for creating or producing something.
do
Usually for work, jobs and activities.
have
Usually for meals, experiences and things you enjoy.
take
Usually for actions and transport.
How it comes up in Part 5
In Reading Part 5 you choose the word (A, B, C or D) that best fits each gap. The four options often have similar meanings, so knowing which words go together is what gets you the mark.
A make B do C have D take
We make a decision.
A took B made C did D had
Take part in means join an activity.
A do B make C have D take
Do your best = try as hard as you can.
Common mistakes
- ✗ I did a mistake.✓ I made a mistake.We 'make' mistakes.
- ✗ We made a party for her birthday.✓ We had a party for her birthday. We 'have' (or 'throw') a party.
- ✗ Can you make a photo of us?✓ Can you take a photo of us?We 'take' photos.

When you learn a new noun, learn its verb too: not just 'mistake', but 'make a mistake'. In Part 5, read the words after the gap – they usually tell you which verb is right.
