C1 ADVANCED · LISTENING

Listening · Part 4

Multiple matching. Five people talking about the same topic. Two tasks: match each speaker to an option in each list.

How it works: read the questions, then tap Listen. You can hear each recording twice, as in the exam. When you have answered everything, check your answers and read the transcript to see where each answer is. Use headphones if you can.

Do both tasks at the same time, or use the first listening for Task 1 and the second for Task 2. Each speaker usually answers Task 1 first.

About C1 Advanced Listening Part 4

  • Task: Multiple matching – five short monologues on the same theme, with two tasks: for each speaker, choose one of eight options in Task 1 and one of eight in Task 2. You hear it twice.
  • What it tests: understanding the gist, attitudes, main points and the speaker's purpose.

How to do it

  1. Read both tasks before you listen.
  2. You can do Task 1 the first time you listen and Task 2 the second time, or both together.
  3. Each speaker usually answers Task 1 first, then Task 2.

Example

Task 1 – why the speaker changed job: A to have more free time   B to work outdoors   C for a higher salary …
Task 2 – what the speaker finds difficult now: D the long hours   E the lack of routine   F working alone …

You hear: “Speaker 1: Money was never the issue – I took a pay cut, actually. I just couldn’t face another winter under office lights; I needed to be outside. What I hadn’t bargained for is how isolated I’d feel without colleagues around.”

Answers for Speaker 1: B and F. She took “a pay cut” (not C) and wanted to be “outside” (B). Now she feels “isolated … without colleagues” (F). Listen for both tasks at the same time.
