C1 ADVANCED · LISTENING

Listening · Part 1

Multiple choice. Three short conversations, with two questions each. Choose the best answer (A, B or C).

How it works: read the questions, then tap Listen. You can hear each recording twice, as in the exam. When you have answered everything, check your answers and read the transcript to see where each answer is. Use headphones if you can.

Finn's exam tip

Each extract has two questions, often about attitude, opinion or purpose. Listen for how the speakers agree or disagree, not just what they say.

About C1 Advanced Listening Part 1

  • Task: Multiple choice (short extracts) – 3 short conversations, unrelated to each other, with 2 questions each (three options: A, B or C). You hear each extract twice.
  • What it tests: understanding feelings, attitudes, opinions, purpose, agreement and disagreement.

How to do it

  1. Read both questions for each extract before it starts.
  2. Listen for how the speakers agree or disagree, not just what they say.
  3. Use the second listening to check both answers.

Example

Question: What do the two friends agree about the new library?

A It is too far from the centre. B Its design is more important than its function. C It will take time for people to use it.

You hear: “Man: The building’s stunning, but I doubt many people will go yet – they’re used to the old one. Woman: Give it a year. Once people realise it’s open late, it’ll be packed.”

Answer: C. He thinks people won’t go “yet”; she says “give it a year”: both expect use to grow slowly. Only the man comments on the design, and neither mentions the location.
