Multiple-choice cloze. Read the text and choose the word (A, B, C or D) that best fits each gap.
About B2 First Use of English Part 1
- Task: Multiple-choice cloze – a short text with 8 gaps; for each gap you choose the right word from four options (A, B, C or D). 1 mark per question.
- What it tests: vocabulary: collocations, fixed phrases, phrasal verbs, words with similar meanings and the prepositions that go with them.
- Suggested time: about 7 minutes.
How to do it
- Read the whole text first to understand what it is about.
- Look at the words just before and after each gap: often only one option fits with them (a collocation or a preposition).
- Try every option in the gap before you choose – all four often have a similar meaning.
- When you are not sure, cross out the options that are clearly wrong and choose between the rest.
Example
Every Friday evening, the old car park behind the station ____ into a lively night market.
A becomes B develops C makes D turns
Answer: D (turns). 'Turn into' means to change completely into something else. 'Become' is never followed by 'into' (it becomes a market). 'Make into' needs an object (they make the car park into a market). 'Develop into' describes a slow process over a long time, not something that happens every Friday.
