B2 FIRST · LISTENING

Listening · Part 1

Multiple choice. Eight short extracts from different situations. Choose the best answer (A, B or C) for each one.

How it works: read the questions, then tap Listen. You can hear each recording twice, as in the exam. When you have answered everything, check your answers and read the transcript to see where each answer is. Use headphones if you can.

Finn's exam tip

Read the question and the options before you listen. The speakers often mention all three options, so listen for what they really mean – not just the words.

About B2 First Listening Part 1

  • Task: Multiple choice (short extracts) – 8 short recordings, unrelated to each other; one question with three options (A, B or C) for each. You hear each recording twice.
  • What it tests: understanding the gist, the main point, the speaker's opinion, feelings, purpose, the place or the relationship between speakers.

How to do it

  1. Read the question and the options before each recording starts.
  2. Speakers often mention all three options: listen for what they really mean.
  3. Use the second listening to check your answer.

Example

Question: You hear a woman talking about a concert. What did she think of it?

A The venue was too small. B The band played for too short a time. C The tickets were overpriced.

You hear: “I didn’t mind paying that much, to be honest, and the hall was actually quite cosy. But forty minutes? I’d hardly sat down before they were saying goodnight.”

Answer: B. She “didn’t mind paying” (not C) and the hall was “cosy” (not A). “Forty minutes … hardly sat down” means the concert was too short.
