Speaking · Part 3

Collaborative task. About 3 minutes. Talk with your partner about a situation and some ideas, and decide which is best.

How it works: the examiner's words are read aloud (you can also read them). Tap Start speaking and answer before the time runs out. If you like, record yourself and listen to your answer – the recording stays on your device and is never sent anywhere.

About B1 Preliminary Speaking Part 3

  • Task: Collaborative task – about 3 minutes. The candidates discuss a situation together, using some pictures or ideas, and decide which is best.
  • What it tests: making and responding to suggestions, agreeing and disagreeing, and reaching a decision.

How to do it

  1. Talk about each idea and say why it is good or bad.
  2. Ask your partner what they think and react to their ideas.
  3. At the end, try to agree on the best idea.

Example answer

Task: A friend is moving to a new town. Talk about which things would help him make new friends there.

Good answer: “What do you think about joining a sports club? I think it’s a good idea because you meet people every week.” – “Yes, I agree. And what about a language course?”

Why it works: give an idea, a reason and ask your partner a question. Agreeing, disagreeing politely (“I’m not sure, because…”) and choosing together get you marks.
