About B1 Preliminary Speaking Part 1
- Task: Interview – about 2 minutes. The examiner asks each candidate questions about themselves: where they live, their studies or work, free time and likes and dislikes.
- What it tests: giving personal information and talking about everyday life, habits and preferences.
How to do it
- Answer in full sentences and add a reason or an example.
- Don't learn answers by heart – just talk naturally.
- If you don't understand, ask: "Sorry, could you repeat that, please?"
Example answer
Examiner: What do you like doing at the weekend?
Good answer: “I usually play football with my friends on Saturday mornings. In the afternoon I like relaxing at home – sometimes I watch a film with my family.”
Why it works: two or three sentences, with a detail (when, who) and different verbs. “I like football.” alone is too short; you don’t need a long speech either.
