Finn's exam tip

Read the sentences first and guess what kind of word is missing: a number, a day, a thing? The answers are words you hear, and spelling matters.

About B1 Preliminary Listening Part 3

  • Task: Gap fill – one person talks for about 3 minutes; you complete 6 gaps in some notes with one or two words, a number or a date. You hear it twice.
  • What it tests: understanding and writing down specific information.

How to do it

  1. Read the sentences first and guess what kind of word is missing.
  2. The gaps follow the order of the recording.
  3. Write the words you hear, and check your spelling.

Example

Notes: The art club meets every ____ afternoon.

You hear: “We used to meet on Wednesdays, but so many people had sports that day that we moved to Thursdays, and that’s worked much better.”

Answer: Thursday. Wednesday is mentioned first, but the club moved. Read the notes before you listen so you know you need a day, and spell it correctly.
