B1 PRELIMINARY · LISTENING

Listening · Part 2

Conversations. Six short conversations about everyday life. Choose the right answer (A, B or C) for each one.

How it works: read the questions, then tap Listen. You can hear each recording twice, as in the exam. When you have answered everything, check your answers and read the transcript to see where each answer is. Use headphones if you can.

Finn's exam tip

Each question is about how someone feels, what they think or why they do something. Listen to the whole conversation: people sometimes change their mind at the end.

About B1 Preliminary Listening Part 2

  • Task: Conversations – 6 short conversations between two people, each with one question and three options (A, B or C). You hear each conversation twice.
  • What it tests: understanding feelings, opinions, reasons and what people agree about.

How to do it

  1. Read the question carefully: is it about a feeling, an opinion or a reason?
  2. Listen to the whole conversation – people sometimes change their mind at the end.
  3. Use the second listening to check your answer.

Example

Question: How does the girl feel about her new school?

A nervous about making friends B pleased with the teachers C worried about the work

You hear: “Boy: So how’s the new school? Girl: Well, I thought the lessons would be really hard, but they’re fine. The teachers are OK. It’s just that everyone already has their own group, and I don’t really know how to join in.”

Answer: A. She was worried about the work before, but now it’s “fine”, so C is wrong. The teachers are only “OK” (B). Her real problem is joining a group of friends.
