Loading the game…

How to play

  1. Choose the level: B1, B2 or C1.
  2. Spin the wheel (Space). It stops on a topic and shows a question.
  3. Talk! Not sure what to say? “Show help” (H) gives you four useful words or phrases. Set the clock to 1 or 2 minutes and start it (T).
  4. Another question (N) on the same topic, or spin again for a new topic.

For teachers

Project the game in Full screen (F): the question is big enough to read from the back of the room. With Teams, give 2 to 4 teams a name and the screen shows whose turn it is each time you spin. In My topics, add your own topics and questions – for the unit you’re teaching – or switch topics off.

More games for your class: Don’t say it!, The Loop and Letter Rush. For exam practice with the real timing, see Speaking for B1, B2 and C1.

Frequent questions

How do you play Spin & Speak?

Choose the level and spin the wheel. It stops on a topic and shows a question to talk about. Answer out loud – on your own, with a partner or in teams. Press “Another question” for a new question on the same topic, or spin again.

What is the difference between the levels?

B1 questions are about you and your everyday life, like Parts 1 and 4 of the B1 Preliminary Speaking test. B2 questions ask for your opinion and comparisons, like Parts 3 and 4 of B2 First. C1 questions are more abstract and open to debate, like Parts 3 and 4 of C1 Advanced.

How long should I speak?

In the exam, answers to these kinds of questions are usually between 20 seconds and a minute. Set the clock to 1 minute to practise a full answer, or 2 minutes for a longer discussion with a partner.

Do the questions repeat?

No. On each topic, a question doesn’t come out again until all the questions on that topic have been used.

Can I add my own topics?

Yes. In “My topics”, add a topic with your own questions, one per line, and switch any topic on or off. If you’re logged in, your topics are saved in your account.

Can I use it in class?

Yes. Use “Full screen” on the projector, and “Teams” to give your teams names: the screen shows whose turn it is. Space spins the wheel, N gives another question, H shows the help and T starts the clock.

Is it free?

Yes. Spin & Speak is free for everyone, with no need to sign up: 12 topics and 288 questions for B1 Preliminary, B2 First and C1 Advanced.
