Use of English · Part 1
Multiple-choice cloze. Read the text and choose the word or phrase (A, B, C or D) that best fits each gap.
About C1 Advanced Use of English Part 1
- Task: Multiple-choice cloze – a short text with 8 gaps; for each gap you choose the right word from four options (A, B, C or D). 1 mark per question.
- What it tests: vocabulary: collocations, fixed phrases, phrasal verbs, words with similar meanings and the prepositions that go with them.
- Suggested time: about 7 minutes.
How to do it
- Read the whole text first to understand what it is about.
- Look at the words just before and after each gap: often only one option fits with them (a collocation or a preposition).
- Try every option in the gap before you choose – all four often have a similar meaning.
- When you are not sure, cross out the options that are clearly wrong and choose between the rest.
Example
When a handful of companies first began experimenting with a four-day working week, most economists ____ the idea as a publicity stunt.
A declined B dismissed C denied D refused
Answer: B (dismissed). 'Dismiss an idea as' something means to decide it is not worth considering. 'Refuse' and 'decline' mean to say no to an offer, and 'deny' means to say something is not true.
